Bair Hugger Lawsuit Information Will Provide News on Complications From Forced-Air Warming Blankets

Southern Med Law Has Launched A Bair Hugger Lawsuit Page Investigating Complaints That The Bair Hugger Forced-Air Warming Blanket Causes Serious Deep-Joint Infections In Patients Who Have Joint Replacement Procedures.

3M-Bair-Hugger-Lawsuits-Southern-Med-LawSouthern Med Law, who is currently representing clients in product liability lawsuits across the country, has launched a Bair Hugger Warming Blanket Lawsuit Page to assist in informing health care professionals and patients about the potential for deep-joint infections associated with the Bair Hugger forced-air warming blanket. The Bair Hugger blanket is used to keep patients warm during surgery to prevent hypothermia. The warming device has become a problem particularly to patients undergoing knee and hip replacement procedures. The firm notes that plaintiffs in Bair Hugger lawsuits assert the warming blanket lifts bacteria and other contaminants from the operating room floor and blows the germs into the sterile surgical site. As a result, patients undergoing joint replacement surgery are at risk of prosthetic joint infections such as sepsis, and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, due to the contaminated air blowing into the surgical site.

“The plaintiffs are also alleging that 3M, Bair Hugger’s manufacturer, was aware of the risk of infections but failed to properly warn doctors and their patients about the risks,” says Dr. Blaudeau, a founder of Southern Med Law.

About 3M Bair Hugger Therapy

According to 3M, filtered air flows through a warming unit that gently and evenly disperses the air throughout the attached blanket, which is isolated from the surgical site by an adhesive strip on the blanket and surgical barrier drapes. The New York Times reported that Bair Hugger’s inventor, Dr. Scott D. Augustine, is campaigning against the same warming product he created. According to the report, Dr. Augustine believes his invention is dangerous to patients undergoing heart valve and joint implant procedures because the forced air can spread bacteria that is linked to infections acquired from the hospital. Dr. Augustine now promotes what he considers a “safer alternative,” which is a warming device that does not use forced air and works like an electric blanket.

Bair Hugger Force-Air Warming Blanket Lawsuits

Court documents indicate that Bair Hugger Lawsuits have been filed against 3M alleging that the Bair Hugger causes infections and contaminates sterile fields in operating rooms during surgery. A Bair Hugger lawsuit was filed on behalf of a 70-year-old Texas man who underwent a total hip replacement surgery in March 2011. According to the complaint, the plaintiff developed a deep-joint infection allegedly as a result of the Bair Hugger product being used during surgery. The infection caused the man to undergo 15 additional surgeries, including a revision surgery for his artificial hip, the complaint said. (Case No. 4:13-cv-01164, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas)

Court records also show that a lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Kansas resident who developed Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), an infection that is resistant to many antibiotics, after having a knee replacement surgery in September 2010. According to the lawsuit, the MRSA infection led to the amputation of the plaintiff’s leg. The lawsuit purports that 3M knew about the risks associated with Bair Hugger but did not redesign the blanket or warn healthcare professionals about the risk.(Case No. Case 2:14-cv-02044, U.S. District Court, District of Kansas)
