Beacon Tip Angiographic Catheters Recalled By Cook Medical Involves Over 95K Catheter At Risk Of Their Tip Splitting Or Separating From The Catheter.

Beacon Tip Angiographic Catheters RecallSouthern Med Law, a law firm that advocates for clients seriously injured by defective medical devices, announces the launch of its Beacon Tip Angiographic Catheter Lawsuit Page to provide information on the problems surrounding the catheter tips separating and splitting. Cook Medical recently issued a Class 1 catheter recall of its Beacon Tip Torcon NB Advantage Catheters, Beacon Tip Royal Flush Plus High-Flow Catheters, and Slip-Cath Beacon Tip Catheters. The company is voluntarily recalling 95,167 angiographic catheters worldwide, which includes 38,895 angiographic catheters in the United States, according to the company’s July 2 news release. Cook Medical said it had received 26 reports of the device malfunctioning, and slightly over half were reports of the Beacon tip splitting or separating from the catheter, the news release. Tip splitting can potentially stop the device from working. The tip separation and splitting from the catheter can cause death or serious injury because the tip could enter the individual’s bloodstream which would require medical intervention to retrieve a separated segment or may block blood flow to end organs, Cook Medical explained.

Beacon Tip Angiographic Catheters Recall

Beacon Tip Angiographic Catheters are used to inject contrast dye into blood vessels in the heart to prepare it for a type of X-ray used in cardiac angiograms, which are tests to diagnose heart conditions, according to Cook Medical. The catheter is inserted into the body through a small puncture made in the skin and placed into the blood vessel along a guide wire before injecting the contrast dye. The 2,239 lots of Beacon Tip Angiographic Catheters recalled were distributed between June 2013 and June 2015 and manufactured from May 9, 2013, to September 1, 2014. The recalled device can be identified by the part number and lot number provided on the outer package product label. The lot numbers are found on the websites of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Cook Medical.

According to the FDA, a Class 1 recalls is the most serious type of recalls because they involve situations in which there is a “reasonable probability” that using the products “will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” The FDA explains that medical device safety alerts are issued in recall situations to warn that a medical device “may present an unreasonable risk of substantial harm.”
