CDC Reports Pregnancy Of Mother With Zika Virus Resulted In Baby Born With Microcephaly

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now seeing birth defects in babies who’s mothers were infected with the Zika Virus after traveling to affected areas. In a case report issued on February 26, the CDC identified nine pregnant women with Zika virus, with one woman giving birth to a baby with mircocephaly, a congenital birth defect that leaves a newborn with an abnormally small head and an underdeveloped brain. The mother reported Zika virus symptoms during her first trimester of pregnancy.

According to the CDC, the mother was among six pregnant women who reported Zika virus symptoms during their first trimester. Of the five other women, two had miscarriages, two decided to have abortions, and one pregnancy continues. Two women reported symptoms during their second trimester and one delivered a healthy baby while the other pregnancy is continuing. A woman exposed to the Zika virus in her third trimester delivered a healthy infant. The women had traveled to American Samoa, Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Samoa.

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus that causes infected individuals to develop symptoms that include fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes). All nine pregnant U.S women reported at least one of four symptoms that included fever, rash, conjunctivitis or arthralgia (joint pain), according to the CDC report. With the rise in the number of reported Zika virus cases in South American countries, especially in Brazil, and the risks of possible adverse pregnancy outcomes due to the disease, the CDC issued a travel alert in January advising pregnant women to postpose trips to countries affected with the Zika virus.

While the CDC is investigating whether Zika virus is the direct cause of birth defects, a medical organization in Argentina released a report in February claiming microcephaly could be caused by a poisonous chemical called, “pyriproxyfen,” which Brazilian government officials began using in a program that started in 2014 to control the mosquito population. The Physicians in Crop-Sprayed Towns said the Brazilian Ministry of Health injected pyriproxyfen into the drinking water supply to stop mosquitos from developing in drinking water tanks. The areas where the chemical was used saw a significant increase in microcephaly birth defects in newborns, the report said. Pyriproxyfen is made by the Toyko-based Sumitomo Chemical, which has subsidiary offices in the United States.
