testosterone-lawsuit-therapy-lawyerUsing AndroGel, one of the most popular testosterone treatments on the market, may increase the likelihood that a man will suffer serious, and potentially life-threatening cardiovascular problems. In January 2014, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) embarked on a safety review of AndroGel and other low testosterone therapy medications after studies linked the drugs to a higher risk of heart attack, strokes and death. AndroGel lawsuits have since been mounting in courts throughout the country, all of which accuse the drug’s manufacturers of failing to warn of its association with dangerous heart problems.

You could be entitled to compensation if you or a man you care about suffered any of the following cardiovascular problems while using AndroGel:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolism

AndroGel Side Effect Complications

testosterone-therapy-lawsuit-lawyersAndroGel is by far the most popular of the available prescription testosterone treatments, making up at least 75% of the market at one time. The drug is approved to treat hypogonadism, which is low testosterone that occurs due to some underlying medical condition. A diagnosis of hypogonadism requires a blood test to determine the amount of testosterone in a patient’s blood. However, some studies have found that up to 25% of men using AndroGel and other testosterone therapies have never undergone such a test. This had led some to surmise that sales of these drugs were driven by aggressive marketing that positioned the medications as remedies for low libido and other problems caused by age-related drops in the hormone, even though testosterone treatment has never been approved for this purpose.

In January 2014, the FDA announced that it was investigating the cardiovascular side effects associated with AndroGel and other low testosterone treatments after two studies tied the drugs to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and deaths in certain men. One of the studies, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in November 2013, found that men who used testosterone supplements were nearly 30% more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or die after three years of use. The second study, which appeared in January 2014 in PLOS One, found that men over the age of 65 and younger men with pre-existing heart disease may face a two-fold increased risk of heart attacks from testosterone treatments.

Since the FDA announced its review, scores of AndroGel lawsuits have been filed in U.S. courts. Because so many claims were expected, a multidistrict litigation was established in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois to allow federal testosterone lawsuits, including those involving AndroGel, to undergo coordinated pretrial proceedings.
