Southern Med Law attorneys are following up on a warning by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning antacids containing aspirin medicines that carry a risk of severe bleeding. Popular over-the-counter antacid products that contain aspirin are used to treat heartburn, upset stomach, sour stomach and acid indigestion. The FDA, however, is investigating eight new cases of serious bleeding caused by these products. Some of patients required a blood transfusion, according to the FDA. The regulatory agency issued the warning so that consumers can be sure to read a product’s safety label and if necessary, look for alternative stomach remedies that do not contain aspirin.

Antacid Bleeding risk due to Aspirin
This is not the first time the FDA issued a warning about bleeding risks associated with aspirin use. In 2009, the agency warned that aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase the risk of internal bleeding, including stomach and gastrointestinal bleeding. In addition to aspirin, NSAIDs include ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen. Acetaminophen is in a class by itself, according to the FDA.
The Antacid Bleeding risk side effect warning signs of stomach or intestinal bleeding include:
- Feeling faint
- Vomiting blood
- Passing black or bloody stools
- Abdominal pain
The FDA required manufacturers of over-the-counter products that contain NSAIDS, such as antacids containing aspirin, to place a warning on their products’ safety label about the bleeding risks. After a review of its Adverse Event Reporting System database, the FDA discovered eight new cases of serious internal bleeding since the 2009 warning. Patients involved in these cases were hospitalized. The FDA only reviewed cases reported to the agency, and said there are likely more unreported cases.
Those at a higher risk for bleeding when using antacid products containing aspirin include people who:
- Are 60 or older
- Have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding problems
- Take blood thinner drugs that reduce the ability of the blood to clot
- Take steroid medicine, such as prednisone, to reduce inflammation
- Take other medicines containing NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen
- Drink three or more alcoholic drinks every day
FDA warns consumers of Aspirin-Antacid Bleeding Risk and will continue to investigate
The FDA said it will continue to investigate this safety issue and plans to hold an advisory committee hearing next year.
