Viagra Melanoma Studies by Jama Internal Medicine and Cell Report

In April 2014, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggested that men who took Viagra were 84% more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma compared to men who were not exposed to the drug. The study consisted of a review of data involving more than 25,000 men who were followed for ten years. At least 142 patients were diagnosed with the serious form of skin cancer, leading the authors of the study to conclude that recent use of Viagra was “significantly associated with increased risk of melanoma.”

In March 2016, a study that appeared in Cell Reports suggested that the impact of Viagra at the cellular level could accelerate the growth and spread of melanoma. The drug works by blocking a certain enzyme that controls blood vessels, but that also has cancer fighting properties. Inhibiting this enzyme may increase levels of a molecule that could cause melanoma to grow more rapidly.

Pfizer Faces Growing Viagra Lawsuits Over Melanoma

By the end of 2015, more than a dozen Viagra melanoma lawsuits had been filed in federal courts around the U.S., and more cases were expected.
