Viagra Melanoma Studies by Jama Internal Medicine and Cell Report

The study consisted of a review of data involving more than 25,000 men who were followed for ten years. At least 142 patients were diagnosed with the serious form of skin cancer, leading the authors of the study to conclude that recent use of Viagra was “significantly associated with increased risk of melanoma.”

In March 2016, a study that appeared in Cell Reports suggested that the impact of Viagra at the cellular level could accelerate the growth and spread of melanoma. The drug works by blocking a certain enzyme that controls blood vessels, but that also has cancer fighting properties. Inhibiting this enzyme may increase levels of a molecule that could cause melanoma to grow more rapidly.

Pfizer Faces Growing Viagra Lawsuits Over Melanoma

By the end of 2015, more than a dozen Viagra melanoma lawsuits had been filed in federal courts around the U.S., and more cases were expected. These plaintiffs claim that Pfizer knew or should have known about the link between Viagra and the skin cancer for years, and assert that studies published as early as 2011 suggested that the medication might promote melanoma cell invasion.

In December 2015, a group of plaintiffs asked the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) to centralize all such federal claims in a single jurisdiction. Pfizer has also voiced support for centralization of the federal Viagra litigation. The JPML is scheduled to hear oral arguments on the matter on March 31, 2016.

What is Viagra?

Pfizer brought Viagra to market in 1998. It is currently indicated for use in men who suffer from erectile dysfunction. The medication has been prescribed to an estimated 35 million patients, and is generally considered safe by most consumers. Viagra quickly became a blockbuster product for Pfizer, and has generated more than $2 billion in annual sales.
