Eliquis Side-Effects: A new blood thinner study has found that patients taking Eliquis, Pradaxa and Xarelto are at risk for major bleeding due to receiving the incorrect dose of medication. The study, conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic, reviewed information from 14,865 patients with atrial fibrillation who took apixaban (Eliquis), dabigatran (Pradaxa) or rivaroxaban (Xarelto) between October 1, 2010, and September 30, 2015. The anticoagulants have a standard dose and a lower dose for patients with kidney problems. Among the 1,473 patients with kidney problems, 43 percent were potentially overdosed, which was associated with a higher risk of bleeding. Among the 13,392 patients who did not have kidney problems, 13.3 percent were potentially underdosed, which is associated with a higher risk of stroke. According to the study, published in the June 2017 issue of Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the doses prescribed for blood thinners are often inconsistent with their drug labeling. The study’s senior author, Dr. Peter Noseworthy, said doctors may prescribe lower doses because of the bleeding events associated with the blood thinners.

Eliquis is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem. Eliquis, along with Xarelto and Pradaxa, are new generation blood thinners promoted as more effective and more convenient to use than warfarin (Jantoven, Coumadin), a blood thinner approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1954. Patients taking Eliquis, Xarelto, and Pradaxa do not have to undergo routine blood monitoring as do patients taking warfarin. Warfarin, however, uses vitamin K as an antidote to reverse its anti-clotting effects. Eliquis and Xarelto do not have an FDA-approved antidote. Praxbind is used as a reversal agent for Pradaxa.

Blood thinner lawsuits filed recently in New York County’s Supreme Court accuse Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Pfizer Inc, which manufactures Eliquis, of failing to “adequately disclose” to patients that Eliquis does not have an agent to reverse the anticoagulation effects of the blood thinner and “such irreversibility would have life-threatening and fatal consequences.” (Eliquis Side-Effects Lawsuits Case Numbers 154745/2017, 154740/2017, Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York)
