Southern Med Law Is Investigating Essure Lawsuit Claims Alleging The Birth Control Device Side-Effects Include Perforates Organs, Pelvic And Abdominal Pain, Unintended Pregnancies, And Other Health Complications.
Essure Lawsuit News: A new study has found that women who have an Essure birth control implant are 10 times more likely to undergo additional operations in one year than women who choose tubal ligation as their permanent birth control method. The re-operations are performed to alleviate complications such as Essure’s device migrating and incompatibility after surgery, according to the study. Essure side-effects lawsuits also claim that women undergo additional surgeries to remove Essure due to the birth-control device migrating, piercing organs or causing other serious injuries to women.
Researchers from Cornell University’s Weill Medical College said the additional operations are a “serious concern.” The study reviewed data of 8,048 patients who used the Essure birth control system, known as hysteroscopic sterilization, and 44,278 patients who underwent laparoscopic sterilization, known as tubal ligation (tying the fallopian tubes) between 2005 and 2013 in New York State. The study, published October 13th in the BMJ medical journal, indicated that women who had an Essure implant were older than women who had their tubes tied, and were more likely to have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, major abdominal surgery and cesarean section.

“The study’s findings affirm the claims of women who have filed Essure lawsuits and submitted adverse events reports about having additional surgeries to remove Essure because of complications,” says Dr. François Blaudeau, a founding partner of Southern Med Law, who strongly advocates for and represents women in Essure lawsuits.
Essure is a non-hormonal permanent birth control system approved in 2002 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Essure has bendable coils that are inserted into the fallopian tubes during a non-surgical procedure in a doctor’s office. The tubes are blocked by scar tissue that forms around the coils over several months which prevents insemination. At a meeting last month, an FDA advisory panel called for a new clinical study on the safety and effectiveness of Essure. The panel suggested setting up a registry of women and following them to gather more information about their experience with Essure. The panel also suggested women who are allergic to metal, have an autoimmune disease, have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, and a history of abnormal uterine bleeding should not use Essure.

Court documents indicate that Essure lawsuit complaints have been filed against Bayer HealthCare, which manufactures Essure, on behalf of women who allege such Essure side effects as pelvic pain, organ perforation and unintended pregnancies. A South Carolina woman recently filed a lawsuit alleging Bayer’s device fractured inside her right fallopian tube. The plaintiff now has daily pain, headaches, abdominal pain, heavy bleeding and intense pelvic pain, emotional pain and mental anguish, the lawsuit said. She has been advised by several doctors that she needs a total hysterectomy as a result, the complaint said. (Case No. 3:15-cv-03995, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California)
