More than 90 low testosterone drug lawsuits have been added over the past month to the multidistrict litigation (MDL) for Low-T drug complaints alleging that AndroGel, Androderm and other Low-T drugs cause blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. The testosterone drug lawsuits pending in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois assert the makers of Axiron, Depo-Testosterone and other products that treat low testosterone levels failed to adequately warn about the cardiovascular risks associated with their products. The number of testosterone complaints rose from 6,278 to 6,369 from November 15 to December 15, according to the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation’s (JPML) MDL statistics report. In June 2014, the JPML consolidated all federally filed testosterone drug lawsuits and transferred them to the Northern Illinois federal court for coordinated pretrial proceedings. The MDL involves six manufacturers that produce such testosterone products as Fortesta, Delaterstryl, and Testim. Plaintiffs contend that men have suffered heart attacks, blood clots and even cardiac deaths after being prescribed testosterone medications. Testosterone replacement therapies are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat hypogonadism, a medical condition that causes low testosterone levels in men that is not due to the aging process. In January 2014, the FDA launched a probe into testosterone products after reviewing studies that indicated serious cardiovascular events associated with prescription testosterone replacement therapies. In March 2014, after reviewing published studies, adverse event reports and meeting with its advisory panel, the FDA required testosterone manufacturers to add information to their product labels about a possible increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients taking testosterone. More recently, the FDA warned that prescription testosterone products can be abused by adults and adolescents, including athletes and body builders.

Court documents indicate the majority of testosterone complaints in the MDL involve AndroGel, a popular testosterone gel which is made and marketed by AbbVie and Abbot Laboratories. U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly, who is managing the MDL, has scheduled six AndroGel bellwether trials, with the first one starting in June 2017. In addition to AbbVie and Abbot Laboratories, other testosterone manufacturers in the MDL are:

•Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which makes Testim
•Eli Lilly and Company and Lilly USA LLC, makers of Axiron
•Pharmaceuticals Inc., which makes Delatestryl and Fortesta
•Pfizer Inc. and its subsidiary, Pharmacia & Upjohn Co. which makes
