Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuits Allege Women Developed Ovarian Cancer After Using Shower to Shower and Baby Powder products For Feminine Hygiene Reports Southern Med Law

talcum powder cancer lawsuits johsnons-baby-powder-ovarian-cancer-lawsuit-lawyerAfter losing three talcum powder cancer lawsuits in 3 trials in the St. Louis Circuit Court, Johnson & Johnson plans to appeal a denial of its change of venue motion. So far this year, three separate St. Louis Circuit Court juries have awarded a total of $197 million to plaintiffs in talcum powder cancer lawsuits. The complaints were filed on behalf of women or their survivors and allege Johnson & Johnson failed to warn its Shower to Shower and Baby Powder products can cause ovarian cancer in women who use the products in their feminine hygiene routine over an extended period of time.

Johnson & Johnson is facing more than 2,500 talcum powder lawsuits, and the majority are filed in St. Louis, according to a Reuters news report. The company filed a motion in August asking for a change of venue 100 miles outside of the city because attorneys seeking potential talcum powder lawsuit cases through consistent advertising makes it difficult for the company to get a fair trial. Johnson & Johnson also maintains the St. Louis court does not have jurisdiction since most of the plaintiffs do not live in the area and the company has headquarters in New Jersey. The St. Louis court denied Johnson & Johnson’s motion but if the Missouri Court of Appeals grants the requests, talcum powder lawsuit cases will have to be filed elsewhere, the Reuters report said.

“To remove the talcum powder cancer lawsuits from St. Louis would cause much upheaval and would further harm plaintiffs who are already dealing with the life-threatening disease of ovarian cancer,” says Dr. François Blaudeau, co-founder of Southern Med Law, who is both an attorney and a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist.

Attorneys at Southern Med Law continue to speak to women and their survivors nationwide regarding talcum powder cancer lawsuits. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, talc is a mineral mined from the earth, and is used in cosmetics, foods and other products. Consumers like talc because it prevents rashes and absorbs moisture. Talcum powder complaints claim talc particles can migrate from a woman’s vagina to the ovaries and cause cancer. Johnson and Johnson asserts that its Baby Powder is safe. The company sold Shower to Shower to Valeant Pharmaceuticals in October 2012. Johnson & Johnson, however, owned Shower to Shower at the time plaintiffs were using the body powder.

The first talcum powder lawsuit trial in St. Louis in February ended in a landmark $72 million jury award to the family of an Alabama woman who routinely used Shower to Shower and Baby Powder for over 30 years. She died of ovarian cancer in October 2015. In May, a South Dakota woman was awarded $55 million after a jury agreed that her ovarian cancer was due to talcum powder use. Last month, a jury awarded $70 million to a California woman who said her cancer diagnosis was the result of using baby powder for over 40 years.
