Mirena IUD Injury Lawsuit Claims Alleging Infection, Ecptopic Pregnancy, Severe Pelvic Pain, Heavy Bleeding, Organ Damage, Loss of a Baby and Other Serious Complications
Mirena Birth Injury Lawsuit News: The National Center for Health Statistics reports the use of long-term contraceptives, which include intrauterine devices (IUDs) like Mirena, have increased nearly fivefold in the last decade among women ages 15 to 44. Women have also been filing Mirena IUD lawsuits that allege the contraceptive device causes birth defects, infertility, organ damage, pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and death, and Mirena’s manufacturer, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, failed to warn of the risks linked with its product.
The government report shows long-term contraceptive use among women 15-44, rose from 1.5 percent in 2002 to 7.2 percent in 2011–2013. Additionally, long-term contraceptive use among women 25-34 doubled from 5.3 percent in 2006-2010 to 11.1 percent in 2011–2013. IUDs, such as Mirena and other long-term birth control devices are popular due to their effectiveness in preventing unintended pregnancies. Research analysts predict the global intrauterine devices market will grow at an annual rate of 3.44 percent from 2014-2019.

“The increase in the use of long-term birth control devices appears to be reflected in the number lawsuits alleging women and their babies have been seriously and fatally injured by using IUDs, such as Mirena,” says Dr. François Blaudeau, founder of Southern Med Law, which is investigating Mirena birth injury lawsuit complaints.

Mirena is a small, T-shaped device that releases a low dose of levonorgestral, a synthetic form of progestin that is used as a contraceptive. Levonorgestral is released directly into the uterus for up to five years. The Mirena implant is inserted by a doctor during an office visit and invasive surgery is not needed. Mirena received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 and today, more than 2 million women in the United States use the device, according to Mirena IUD complaints. Mirena is recommended for women who have had at least one child.
Filings of federal Mirena IUD injury lawsuit claims against Bayer are continuing in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. Additionally, state lawsuits are consolidated in a multicounty litigation program in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court. The Mirena claims commonly allege that Mirena tends to migrate from its original position in the uterus, and may result in a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy. The lawsuit complaints also claim that the fetus is placed at risk if a uterine pregnancy occurs and the IUD cannot be removed.
