New Federal Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuit Claims J&J Failed To Warn Of Ovarian Cancer Risk

Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuits Allege J&J’s Shower to Shower And Baby Powder Can Lead To Ovarian Cancer When Used Regularly For Feminine Hygiene

The company is facing over 2,500 talcum powder lawsuits in St. Louis Circuit Court, Bergen County Circuit Court in New Jersey, and in other courts around the country. The cancer lawsuits claim that women who regularly use Shower to Shower and Baby Powder for their feminine hygiene needs have developed ovarian cancer and the company failed to warn about the cancer risks.

The latest complaint filed on December 9 said that a California woman who used Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower and Baby Powder products “for nearly her entire life” was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2005. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy. However, the woman died of ovarian cancer in September 2014. The lawsuit contends that Johnson & Johnson should have known that using talcum powder-based products in the genital area significantly increases the risk of cancer. While the woman continued using the products after her diagnosis, the complaint accuses the company of failing to inform customers of the “known catastrophic health hazard” associated with its talcum powder products. “No matter what state or in what court these lawsuits are filed, the allegations are the same: Regular use of talcum powder in the abdominal or perineal area places women
at risk for ovarian cancer,” says Dr. François Blaudeau, co-founder of Southern Med Law, who is both an attorney and a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist.

Attorneys at Southern Med Law continue to speak to women and their survivors nationwide regarding talcum powder cancer lawsuits. The firm urges women who believe they developed ovarian cancer due to long-term use of Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower or Baby Powder to contact Southern Med Law to discuss their legal rights and for a free talcum powder cancer lawsuit review. Talc is a mineral mined from the earth and is used in a variety of products, including cosmetics and foods. Talc absorbs moisture and prevents rashes. Johnson & Johnson contends that its Baby Powder is safe. While Johnson & Johnson sold Shower to Shower in October 2012, the company owned the product at the time plaintiffs used it.

Court documents show that while over 200 talcum powder cancer lawsuits are pending in Bergen County Superior Court in New Jersey, the vast majority of cases are filed in the St. Louis Circuit Court where Johnson & Johnson lost three talcum powder cancer trials. The trial ended with a $72 million jury award to the family of an Alabama woman who died of ovarian cancer in 2015. The second trial held in May ended with a $55 million award to a South Dakota woman, while $70 million was awarded to a California woman in October. While Johnson & Johnson’s request for a change of venue 100 miles outside of St. Louis was denied, the company plans to appeal to the Missouri Court of Appeals.
