Low Testosterone Treatment Lawsuits Allege Men Suffered Heart Attacks, Strokes, and Other Cardiac Events After Taking Low Testosterone Therapy Prescription Drugs

low-testosterone-drug-lawsuits-therapy-lawyerFilings of low testosterone treatment lawsuits against the manufacturers of AndroGel, Androderm, Testim, Axiron and others continue at a steady pace. It has been a little over a year since all federally filed low testosterone complaints were consolidated in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois. According to the Northern Illinois court’s website, there are 1,802 low testosterone complaints pending in the litigation as of June 5, 2015. The testosterone therapy lawsuits are filed against six testosterone manufacturers and their subsidiaries on behalf of men who died or suffered potentially life-threatening events, including heart attacks, blood clots, and stroke, allegedly after using such prescription testosterone drugs as Testim and Androderm to treat hypogonadism, which is low testosterone levels in men who have an underlying medical condition that is not related to the aging process. “For filings of testosterone therapy lawsuits to mount to 1,800 in one year’s time shows that men are still experiencing health complications allegedly caused by taking prescription testosterone drugs.” – Southern Med Law.

As stated in court records, a number of studies have suggested that men who take testosterone products to treat hypogonadism are at an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Court documents cite a study published in JAMA in November 2013 that suggests that testosterone replacement therapy raises the risk of death, heart attack and stroke by about 30 percent in men who use testosterone products. The court documents also cite a study published in PLOS ONE in January 2014 which found that testosterone use doubled the risk of heart attacks in men over 65 years old and younger men with a previous diagnosis of heart disease. The testosterone complaints purport that testosterone makers have marketed their drugs as safe for human use but failed to mention any potential cardiac or stroke side-effect risks associated with their products. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study in 2010 that was discontinued after a very high number of men in the testosterone group experienced adverse events after using the prescription medication. Southern Med Law notes that filings of low testosterone lawsuits began to increase after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in January 2014 that it was launching an investigation into all FDA-approved testosterone gels, injections, creams and patches due to the complaints of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular complications associated with testosterone products. The law firm further notes that in June 2014, the FDA ordered labels of all FDA-approved prescription testosterone products to include a general warning about the risk of venous blood clots developing due to using low testosterone treatment drugs. By March 2015, the FDA, after reviewing testosterone studies and receiving recommendations from its advisory panels, also ordered safety labels of prescription testosterone drugs to contain warnings that use of testosterone drugs could place patients at potential risk for a heart attack or stroke, the law firm reports.
