Over 2,000 IVC Filter Lawsuits Have Been Filed After Blood Clot Trapping Device May Cause Serious Injuries

IVC Filter Lawsuits Allege The Blood Clot Filters Are Defective And Can Migrate, Fracture, Tilt And Cause Other Health Complications.

ivc-filter-lawsuit-attorney-class-action-lawsuits-4As the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation prepares to release updated numbers on IVC filter lawsuits filed, thousands of IVC filter complaints are already pending across the country. The inferior vena cava (IVC) filters have been the center of lawsuits since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned in 2010 about problems associated with IVC filters such as tilting, migrating, fracturing, and perforating the heart, lungs and vena cava.

Cook Medical Inc., C.R. Bard and Cordis Corp. are among the medical manufacturers facing lawsuits over their IVC filters. The IVC filter lawsuits against the companies commonly allege that their medical devices used to reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism have design defects and cause health complications and place patients at risk for fatal blood clots.

“We have met men and women who have unfortunately suffered serious injuries believed to have been caused by IVC filters manufactured by C.R. Bard Inc., Cook Medical Inc. and Cordis Corp. Our firm is committed to making our justice system work for them,” says Dr. François Blaudeau, founder of Southern Med Law.

The firm’s attorneys are investigating potential injury claims from patients implanted with IVC filters manufactured by Cook Medical Inc., C.R. Bard and Cordis Corp. Dr. Blaudeau, who is both an attorney and highly regarded practicing physician, possesses a unique understanding of the medical and legal issues at the center of IVC filter lawsuits.

IVC filters are small, cage-like devices implanted into the inferior vena cava. The filters are used to trap blood clots and stop them from reaching the lungs and causing a pulmonary embolism. IVC filters are implanted in patients who cannot take blood thinners or when anticoagulant therapy cannot be used or is ineffective. The FDA recommends removing retrievable IVC filters once the risk of blood cots subsides.

Court documents indicate that a multidistrict litigation (MDL) has been established for claims involving C.R. Bard’s Recovery and G2 IVC filters. Over 1,200 Bard IVC filter lawsuits are pending in the MDL in the U.S. District Court, District of Arizona. (In Re: Bard IVC Filter Lawsuits – MDL No. 2641) Another 1,200 lawsuit claims are pending in an MDL in the Southern Indiana district court for Cook Medical’s Celect and Günther Tulip IVC Filters.
