Talc is a soft mineral made up of magnesium, silicon, hydrogen and oxygen. Talc is convenient because it absorbs moisture, prevents rashes and reduces friction. The mineral is found in cosmetics, rice, chewing gum and other frequently used products, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Since the 1970s, epidemiological studies have associated ovarian cancer with long-term use of talcum powder in the genital area. A study published in the journal of Epidemiology in March, estimated that consistent genital talc use increases a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer by as much as 33 percent.
