Southern Med Law Attorneys Are Investigating Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuit Claims That Allege Talc-Based Products Have The Potential To Cause Ovarian Cancer.

Talc-Powder-Cancer-LawsuitsNearly two months after a St. Louis, Missouri, jury rendered a record $72 million verdict in a talcum powder cancer lawsuit, another talcum powder lawsuit claim is scheduled for trial in April. Talcum powder lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts nationwide alleging talcum powder manufacturers failed to warn consumers about the potential for their talc products to cause ovarian cancer in women who routinely use the powders for feminine hygiene use.

The second talcum powder cancer lawsuit set for trial in the 22nd Judicial District in St. Louis, is filed against Johnson & Johnson. The case is part of a single lawsuit that names 58 plaintiffs from 11 states. The Missouri state courts allow one lawsuit to have up to 99 plaintiffs. All of the plaintiffs stated they used Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products on a long-term basis to “dust their perineum for feminine hygiene purposes” and have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The plaintiffs claim the company failed to warn consumers about the ovarian cancer risks associated with their talcum powder products. Among the plaintiffs named in the complaint was a 62-year-old Alabama woman who died of ovarian cancer in October 2015 after using Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products for over 30 years. Her complaint was the first to go to trial in February and the jury awarded her family a landmark $72 million in damages (Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuit Case No. 1422-CC09012, 22nd Judicial District (St. Louis), Missouri)

Talcum powder is made from talc, a mineral made up of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. Talcum powder keeps skin dry and prevents rashes by absorbing moisture well and reducing friction. Talc is widely used in cosmetic products such as baby powder, facial powders, and in other consumer products including chewing gum and rice.

In addition to the mass tort pending in St. Louis, more than 120 talcum powder cancer lawsuits are pending in a multicounty litigation in New Jersey’s Atlantic County Superior Court. In December, the New Jersey Supreme Court consolidated all talcum powder lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson on behalf of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer or other injuries after using products the company’s Baby Powder or Shower-to-Shower Body Powder for feminine hygiene purposes.
