Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuits Accuse J&J Of Not Warning Women Of The Risk of Developing Ovarian Cancer After Prolonged Use Of Talcum Powder For Feminine Hygiene.
As talcum powder cancer lawsuit claims move forward in state courts, at least 11 new complaints have been filed in nine federal courts nationwide since August. All of the ovarian cancer lawsuits similarly allege that women who used Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower for long-term feminine hygiene use developed ovarian cancer, and the company failed to warn of the cancer risks associated with its products.
Court documents in talcum powder cancer lawsuits indicate that among the most recent filings was a wrongful death lawsuit involving a 43-year-old Texas woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer allegedly after using Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower and Baby Powder for 23 years. (Case 3:16-cv-02353, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas) Another wrongful death lawsuit alleges a 48-year-old Ohio woman who used Baby Powder for nearly her entire life died of ovarian cancer. (Case No. 3:16-cv-02043, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio) Other new cases were filed in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Three cases were filed in Georgia and two in Kentucky. The majority of state court lawsuits are filed in Missouri where at least 1,000 cases are pending in the Circuit Court of the City of St. Louis. Johnson & Johnson recently asked for a change of venue 100 miles outside of St. Louis where two talcum powder cancer trials have already been held.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines talc as a soft mineral consisting of magnesium, silicon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Talc is known for its absorbency and ability to protect skin. It is also found in familiar products and food, including rice and cosmetics.

Court records show the first federal talcum powder lawsuit was filed in 2009 and went to trial four years later. The South Dakota plaintiff who developed ovarian cancer in 2006 allegedly after using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder for 30 years was not awarded damages. However, the jury found the company failed to adequately warn of the ovarian cancer risks. (Case No. 4:09-cv-04179, U.S. District Court, District of South Dakota) Earlier this year, a Missouri state court jury awarded $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder for 30 years (Talcum Powder Lawsuit Case No. 1422-CC09012-01).
