For generations, millions of women have used products like Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower to maintain feminine hygiene. However, since 1971, talcum powder ovarian cancer studies have suggested that talc powder may contribute to the development of ovarian cancer, a dangerous malignancy that often proves deadly. That year, British researchers reported that talc particles had been detected in 10 of 30 ovarian tumors they had analyzed.

Since then, additional studies have raised concerning questions about the potential link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. Just this past December, a paper published in Epidemiology reported that women who routinely applied talcum powder to their genitals, underwear, sanitary napkins and tampons had a 33% increase risk of ovarian cancer.

In 2013, a jury empaneled in the U.S. District Court, District of South Dakota, to weigh evidence in the nation’s first talcum powder ovarian cancer trial ruled that regular and repeated use of Johnson’s Baby Powder contributed to the development of the plaintiff’s ovarian cancer. However, because of South Dakota law, the panel did not award any monetary damages.

Just this February, a jury in St. Louis, Missouri, awarded $72 million to the family of an ovarian cancer victim who died after using Johnson & Johnson talc products for more than three decades. The judgment included $10 million in compensatory damages, as well as $62 million in punitive damages for Johnson & Johnson’s failure to warn women about the dangers associated with its talc-based products. The jury was the first to award financial damages in a case involving talcum powder and ovarian cancer.
