The lawsuits were filed by Women who contend they have experienced alopecia or permanent hair loss, after taking the Taxotere chemotherapy drug to treat breast cancer. The plaintiffs contend that Taxotere’s developer Sanofi-Aventis and its subsidiaries misled women and their doctors about Taxotere’s safety and failed to warn them about the permanent hair loss side-effect. Taxotere alopecia complaints rose from 949 to 1,006 from April 17 to May 15, according to the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation’s (JPML) statistics report. The JPML established a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in October 2016 for all federally filed Taxotere hair loss lawsuits. The complaints are centralized in the Eastern District of Louisiana for coordinated pretrial proceedings. The JPML found the complaints had common allegations of Taxotere causing permanent hair loss and Sanofi-Aventis and its subsidiaries failing to adequately warn about the alopecia side effects. Taxotere (docetaxel) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1996 to treat locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in women whose previous chemotherapy treatments failed. Taxotere is part of a family of drugs known as Taxanes which are widely used as chemotherapy agents. Taxanes block cell growth by interfering with cell division. In addition to hair loss, patients taking Taxotere reported other side effects that include anemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, infections, nausea and vomiting, and skin reactions.

One Taxotere Hair Loss lawsuit added to the MDL was filed on behalf of a Louisiana woman who took the chemotherapy drug from June 2010 to July 2010 and allegedly suffered hair loss. According to the complaint, the woman also suffered mental anguish, severe and debilitating emotional distress, physical and mental pain as well as economic and non-economic damages. The Louisiana woman’s complaint could be included in a proposed Taxotere class-action request pending before Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt, who is managing the Taxotere MDL. In April, three other Louisiana women asked Judge Engelhardt to grant class-action status to their Taxotere joint complaint filed under Louisiana’s Product Liability Act. The proposed class-action lawsuit would include all women from Louisiana who were given Taxotere during chemotherapy and have suffered from permanent hair loss and other injuries.
