Filings Of Viagra Melanoma Lawsuits Began Increasing After Studies Linked Sildenafil To An Increased Risk Of Melanoma Skin Cancer.
The recently established Viagra melanoma lawsuit more than doubled in four weeks’ time, becoming one of three fastest growing multidistrict litigations (MDL) nationwide, court statistics show. The Viagra melanoma cancer lawsuits allege Pfizer Inc., which manufactures the “little blue pill,” failed to adequately warn that its popular erectile dysfunction drug may be associated with an increased risk of melanoma skin cancer. “The doubling of the Viagra melanoma lawsuit filings is indicative of the number of men who are suffering the life-threatening melanoma allegedly due to taking Viagra,” says Dr. François Blaudeau, co-founder of Southern Med Law.

Statistics from the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) show the Viagra melanoma MDL went from 35 lawsuit filings to 80 lawsuit filings from June 15 to July 15. The JMPL consolidated all federal Viagra melanoma lawsuit claims in April when the number of cases pending nationwide was 14. Plaintiffs who initially requested the Viagra MDL said they expected more Viagra complaints would be filed in the future.
In addition to the Viagra litigation, MDLs for 3M Company’s Bair Hugger forced air warming blanket lawsuits and Volkswagen clean diesel lawsuits showed significant increase over the past month. Bair Hugger claims, which can now be filed directly into the MDL, rose from 341 to 457 while Volkswagen complaints climbed from 829 to 1,046, according to the JPML which maintains statistics for MDLs nationwide. Reuters reported that Volkswagen lawsuits were filed in advance of a hearing to give preliminary approval to a proposed $10 billion settlement.

Viagra (sildenafil) is a prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998 to treat erectile dysfunction. Pfizer’s blockbuster sildenafil drug, sold under the brand name of Viagra, has been prescribed to millions of patients and generated $1.88 billion in global sales, the company said in its 2013 annual report.

A study published in the April 2014 issue of JAMA Internal Medicine involved more than 25,800 men who had used sildenafil at least once and were followed for 10 years. The study found that recent sildenafil users were 84 percent more likely to be diagnosed with invasive melanoma compared to men who did not use sildenafil. Researchers concluded that recent use of Viagra was significantly associated with increased risk of invasive melanoma.

Court documents indicate that Viagra melanoma lawsuits accuse Pfizer of failing to warn about the potential risk of developing melanoma that has been scientifically linked to Viagra. The plaintiffs say they would not have used the drug at all or limited the dosage or length of time during which they used it had they known about the melanoma risk.
