Plaintiffs In Xarelto Bleeding Lawsuits Allege The Blood Thinner Caused Brain Bleeds, Blood Clots, And Other Bleeding Side Effects.
With federal Xarelto bleeding lawsuits rising to nearly 15,000, four of the blood thinner lawsuits selected for bellwether trials have been rescheduled. The Xarelto bleeding lawsuits accuse Bayer HealthCare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., which makes and markets the blood thinner, of failing to adequately warn about Xarelto’s side effects. Xarelto lawsuits allege men and women suffered uncontrollable bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, brain bleeds, blood clots, and even death from the prescription blood thinner. U.S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon, who is managing the Xarelto MDL, rescheduled the trials based on a request from both parties, according to a Case Management Order (CMO) issued on January 30. The first Xarelto trial was reset from March 13 to April 24 in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana in New Orleans where the Xarelto MDL is housed. The second trial is scheduled for May 30, also in New Orleans. The third trial is scheduled for June in the Southern District of Mississippi and the fourth trial is set for July in the Northern District of Texas. The first Xarelto bellwether trial involves a Louisiana man who was prescribed Xarelto in January 2014 to reduce the risk of stroke due to atrial fibrillation. Less than a month later, the plaintiff suffered severe gastrointestinal bleeding and received several blood transfusions, according to the complaint. Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a prescription anticoagulant first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2011 to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism from occurring after hip or knee replacement surgery. Xarelto’s approval was later expanded to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem and to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Xarelto is considered a new generation blood thinner compared to warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), which received FDA approval in 1954. Patients taking warfarin undergo periodic blood tests, but using Xarelto is more convenient because patients are not required to take periodic blood tests. Xarelto, however, does not have an approved antidote to counteract its anticoagulation effects. Warfarin uses vitamin K as an antidote for internal bleeding, according to the FDA.

Filings of Xarelto bleeding lawsuits indicate a recently filed Xarelto complaint alleges a Louisiana woman died in June 2016 after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage a year earlier. The complaint contends the woman, who took Xarelto from August 2015 to January 2016, was not aware of Xarelto’s bleeding risk because the defendants failed to provide adequate warnings about the blood thinner.
